Yesterday I had the honor of attending the Michigan Works! Impact Awards ceremony in Lansing. These awards recognize significant accomplishments within Michigan communities. The award winners included private sector businesses, workers, Michigan Works! Agencies and partners. I attended to support BorgWarner’s special recognition for their commitment to training employees.
BorgWarner expanded its Powertrain Technical Center in 2015 and with that they created 180 jobs. Through Michigan Works! BorgWarner was able to offer opportunities for employees to receive highly-specialized training.
One test technician in particular was recognized for his leadership at BorgWarner. Maureece Musgraves, a 10 year veteran at the company, took advantage of the training. He went from a shipping and receiving position to a full-time position thanks to the Skilled Trade Training Fund dollars. Programs like this through Michigan Works! are vital to developing talent in Michigan. BorgWarner is a shining example giving workers a competitive edge using resources provided Michigan Works!
The key themes of the day were collaboration and partnership and their economic impact. We all know that the success of any company depends upon its people. Continually investing in people and building their capability to do their jobs and advance their careers will continue to drive Michigan’s economy.
