Public Safety services are key to the overall success and reputation of any community. A good police department and fire department give citizens the peace of mind they need to enjoy the community in which they live. Perhaps there is nothing more important than feeling safe and secure. So when we asked citizens about police and fire services here in the community, they answered as follows.
Would you say the City has too many, just the right amount, or too few police officers on patrol?
Men: Too many (4%), Just the right amount (67%), Too few (13%), and Uncertain (17%)
Women: Too many (1%), Just the right amount (65%), Too few (12%), and Uncertain (22%)
These results indicate that two out of three citizens who responded to the survey believe that we have the right amount of police officers on patrol.
When it comes to Fire/EMS personnel, we asked the same question.
Would you say the City has too many, just the right amount, or too few Fire/EMS personnel available to residents?
Men: Too many (0%), Just the right amount (53%), Too few (7%), and Uncertain (40%)
Women: Too many (0%), Just the right amount (52%), Too few (9%), and Uncertain (39%)
Unlike the 2 out of 3 citizens who believe there is just the right amount of police patrol, only 1 out of 2 citizens believe there is just the right amount of Fire/EMS personnel available. That response about Fire/EMS personnel is timely since the citizens just recently voted to increase funding for our Fire Department. Part of these funds is designated to modestly increasing the size of our Fire Department staff, something that is truly needed for our growing community.
And as a companion question to the above, the survey asked: In general, how safe do you feel living in Auburn Hills?
42% of respondents said very safe, 52% said safe, 4% said uncertain, 2% said unsafe, and 1% said very unsafe.
While we are pleased that more than 9 out of 10 citizens who responded said they feel either safe or very safe, it is important to strive to achieve an even greater number. For the 3% answering unsafe or very unsafe, I can only surmise that perhaps they have had an experience while in the community that has caused them to formulate this opinion. Our police and fire departments welcome your suggestions and comments about improvements we can make that will give as many citizens as possible a greater sense of safety and security.
