Santa Claus is Coming To Our Town … Tomorrow!

The holiday season is here and the City of Auburn Hills is anxiously awaiting the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus.  Mayor McDaniel and the City Council will welcome our special guests, and their reindeer to Downtown Auburn Hills, tomorrow, December 1st at 6:00 p.m.

Following the lighting of the tree, everyone is invited to visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus in The Downtown Education Nook (DEN) and take a memorable photograph home as a keepsake.  Participants can enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride through town, snack on s’mores at the bonfire pit, visit with Santa’s reindeer, and walk through Downtown to see the specials the stores and restaurants have to offer.  This celebration is a great way to build memories and explore Auburn Hills’ expanding Downtown area.

The holidays are a time for kindness and charity. The City of Auburn Hills has partnered with Project Linus to help provide warmth, comfort and security to children with life-threatening illnesses.  Guests of the ceremony will have the opportunity to volunteer as a ‘blanketeer’ and create a handmade fleece blanket to be donated to children in need.  Visit the University Center during the event to participate in this quick, and family friendly community volunteer project.

One More Year: City Council Extends Approval Of Two Projects

This past Monday night, the City Council approved one-year extensions for two projects originally proposed for construction this year.  The combined investment for both developments is estimated at $11.7 million.

First, Legend Valve and Fitting intends to build a 59,826 square foot building addition on the west side of their existing facility.  The property is located at 300 N. Opdyke Road.

Second, Basil Bacall plans to construct a 96-room, Hilton Garden Inn hotel.  The site of the new three-story, 67,740 square foot building will be located at 3900 Baldwin Road adjacent to Great Lakes Crossing Outlets, directly east of the TownePlace Suites hotel.

The developments did not move forward this year due to business timing and financing.  Both are anticipated to begin in 2018.

Mahindra Brings Auburn Hills An Off-Road Adventure

Yesterday, we officially welcomed Mahindra North America to Auburn Hills.  It was exciting to hear from Rick Haas, President and CEO and Chairman Anand Mahindra on the vision they have for the growth of their company.  This is the first new vehicle assembly plant in southeast Michigan in 25 years.

The Auburn Hills facility, formerly the EDAG building on Rex Blvd, will be upgraded to serve as Mahindra’s North American automotive headquarters, engineering center, and manufacturing location of three models of off-road utility vehicles, as well as prototype vehicles.

The project is expected to generate a total capital investment of nearly $22.3 million and create 105 jobs.  These numbers are expected to double in the next few years.  Auburn Hills was chosen over competing sites in Alabama, Arizona, Indiana, North Carolina and Texas.

We are honored that Mahindra Automotive North America chose Auburn Hills to open their new manufacturing facility.  Their company product line meets our goal of diversifying our local economy and that of Oakland County.  This strategic move on behalf of Mahindra once again proves that metro Detroit remains the auto capital of the world.

We wish Mahindra much success in the future.

The Three P’s of Downtown

Last week, my colleague Samantha Seimer and I attended a fantastic overview of placemaking as it relates to creating vibrant downtowns.  As an affiliate member of the Oakland County Main Street Program, we have the opportunity to learn from experts in the arena of downtown development.

It was fascinating to get perspectives on the three P’s: Parking, Placemaking and Preservation.  It was most interesting to hear about the on-set of the concept of creating “main street” back in the early 1920’s and how many of the design standards are still used today.

Each presenter spoke about the quality of life that downtowns bring to communities across Oakland County.  The services offered through this program will continue to assist Auburn Hills in enhancing and supporting our wonderful downtown.

Wescast Industries Proposes To Occupy The Former GKN Building

After three years of vacancy, Wescast Industries, Inc. has submitted a development application to the City of Auburn Hills to occupy the former GKN Automotive building located at 3300 University Drive.  The property is situated at the southwest corner of University Drive and Seyburn Drive, just west of the Auburn Hills Civic Center Campus.

Wescast, based in Brantford, Ontario, intends to move their North American headquarters and technical center to this location.  The company is best known as the largest manufacturer in the world of cast exhaust manifolds and turbocharger housings for passenger cars and light trucks.  The wholly-owned subsidiary of Chinese-based Bohong Group is seeking Special Land Use Permit approval to conduct an ancillary light industrial activity at the facility.

Those interested in learning more about this proposal are encouraged to attend the Planning Commission meeting scheduled for Wednesday, November 15th at 7:00 p.m. in the City Council Chamber at City Hall.  A final decision on the project is anticipated at the City Council meeting scheduled for Monday, November 27th.

Industrial Building Space Demand Spurs New Project On Giddings

An application has been submitted to the City of Auburn Hills from A.J. Damman Company to construct a speculative 76,923 square foot light industrial building on property located at 3985 Giddings Road.

The proposed building will consist of a two-story, 14,305 square foot office building with an associated 62,618 square foot manufacturing facility.  Construction is expected to begin in early Spring 2018 with a total investment estimated at $4.5 million.

Those interested in learning more about this proposal are encouraged to attend the Planning Commission meeting scheduled for Wednesday, November 15th at 7:00 p.m. in the City Council Chamber at City Hall.  A final decision on the project is anticipated at the City Council meeting scheduled for Monday, November 27th.

Yesterday was a very special day.  We celebrated the groundbreaking of INCOE Corporation’s new World Headquarters Facility in Oakland Technology Park.  Even though the weather was chilly, it was a heartwarming celebration.

INCOE is a global company that is 100% family owned and operated.  Founder, Mr. Alex Seres, set the benchmark for developing products that add value and ease of use; always with customer productivity and customer service in mind.

Since 1958, three generations of Seres family members have taken what began as a mom and pop operation, to a company that is now a world leader and pioneer in the plastics industry.  Their nearly 60-year story is very personal to the Seres family and they are very proud of the employees who have been with them along the way.

We are so excited to welcome INCOE to the Auburn Hills community and wish them all the best as they continue to grow!
