34,800lbs Collected at the Household Hazardous Waste Event

The results are in from our annual Household Hazardous Waste disposal event which was held on Saturday May 4, 2019. Once a year we host this event for city residents so they can drop off household items not normally accepted by their curbside trash provider. This event diverts hazardous materials from landfills and helps keep them out of the environment. Materials collected are either recycled or disposed of in accordance with EPA regulations.

Here are the highlights of the items collected at this year’s event:

  • 10,000lbs of electronics
  • 3,000 gallons of motor oil
  • 2,500lbs of oil based paint
  • 900lbs of pesticide
  • 800lbs of household batteries
  • 700lbs of automotive batteries
  • 500lbs of aerosol cans
  • 400lbs of acid and bases
  • 300lbs of flammable liquids
  • 200lbs of light bulbs
  • 70lbs of medicine
  • 8lbs of smoke detectors
  • 4lbs of mercury
  • 14,000lbs of other items

Thanks to all the residents who participated! If you missed this year’s event, you can wait until next year or you may be able to participate in a neighboring community’s program for a fee. You can find the other household hazardous waste events by clicking here.

Not sure about how to dispose of a household item?

You can check with the place of purchase or by contacting the manufacturer. Another good resource is your local trash hauler. For Auburn Hills residents, it will be Waste Management www.wm.com
