Addressing Outdoor Storage Safety

Who remembers the pallet fire at US Farathane?

The events of that day have led the city to evaluate our Outdoor Storage Zoning Ordinance as it pertains to firefighting tactics and the safety of everyone in our community. Changes are also coming within the International Fire Code (IFC) which will need to be implemented, however, we wanted to meet with our businesses and surrounding fire departments to gain a better understanding of how these phased-in changes are logical and digestible for our companies.

It is very important to us that we build solid working relationships with all of our companies here in Auburn Hills.  While all of our businesses may not have outdoor storage permits, we felt an open dialogue with the companies that do would benefit to a discussion on how the changes in the ordinance may affect their company.

We had a very productive discussion and were able to listen to some potential new solutions that would be beneficial to our companies and our Fire Department, should there be a fire incident in their outdoor storage area.

We plan to get together again to talk about regulations and to see if we can come up with a good compromise for everyone involved.
