Waste Haulers Come & Go

As we come to the end of 2021, we acknowledge that the waste hauler contract that the City of Auburn Hills has been engaged in with Waste Management is coming to an end after 10 years of service. Waste Management’s last week of waste and recycling pickup is Monday, December 27, 2021 through Friday, December 31, 2021. Beginning Monday, January 3, 2022, we welcome a new trash hauling contract with GFL Environmental. To help make the transition as smooth as possible, it’s important to know that your GFL trash collection day will continue to be the same as your Waste Management pickup day, and collection of waste and recycling materials will also remain the same.

As we change services from Waste Management to GFL Environmental, there are some items that need to be taken care of to assist with the transition.

Recycling bins: Every customer who recycles should have received an 18-gallon bin from GFL to put your approved recyclables in for pickup. GFL will begin collecting the approved recyclable materials in their bins starting the week of January 3. During the last week of December 2021, Waste Management will collect your recyclables and take the 18-gallon Waste Management bin with them.

Waste Management (WM) Trash carts: Given the information we had available at the time of publication, the Winter newsletter stated that the Waste Management bins and carts were going to be picked up immediately after the last pickup of the year in December. Unfortunately, that information has now changed.  The larger Waste Management trash carts on wheels will be removed beginning the week of January 10, 2022. Customers are being asked to place the empty Waste Management carts out on your regular trash day for removal. Below are important instructions and contact information provided by Waste Management for customers to follow to assist with cart removal.

Starting the week of January 10, please place the empty Waste Management cart at the curbside and leave it until it is retrieved. Removal may take a few days.  NOTE: Making sure the cart is empty is very important.  If the cart is full, it will be left at the curb and you may be charged for the cart.  We suggest taping the cart lid closed or putting a note on the cart so that your household does not fill the container.

Beginning January 3, GFL Environmental will pick up refuse in plastic bags, or any container or bin.  For those that have ordered a cart from GFL, those are expected to be delivered the week of January 3 as well.  There has been a back order on delivery of GFL carts from the manufacturer, however all the carts are expected to be delivered the first week of January.
