You’ve likely heard this metaphor used in the sports world to describe a team that has a lot of talent at its disposal. Not only are there talented players on the field, floor, or ice, but there is also a lot of talent on the bench that can be called on at any time to step up and perform. Well, the Auburn Hills team has a very deep bench. The depth of our bench was certainly demonstrated this winter when the staff at the DPW stepped up and assisted in updating the restaurant at Fieldstone Golf Club. With the change to a new food vendor at Fieldstone beginning in spring of 2016, we felt the time was right to update and rebrand the restaurant. Thursday, March 17th will mark the grand opening of the new Arrowhead Grille (a tie back to the original golf course name). Continue reading “A Deep Bench”
The most common question I hear each year is, “What do you do with all your time during a Michigan Winter?”
The typical Michigan golf season begins to wind down in the beginning of October. If the weather remains mild, October can be a great revenue generator as we prepare for the onset of November. Good weather will lead to decent sales but typically the best November will only be 15% of our normal peak season months. November is all about preparations for the severe winter ahead.
It is November 10th and our crews have completed a majority of our course maintenance with the aeration of greens, tees and fairways. The tall native grasses have be cut and our fall projects have been completed. The irrigation system of over 1,800 heads & 110 valves have been winterized. Mowing is ongoing in order to mulch the remaining leaves and crews will continue to maintain a clean property. Tree removal and pruning is a perfect task in the fall and winter. Today we will be spraying a fungicide to all tees, greens and fairways. This is done to prevent dollar spot and snow mold on these surfaces (it is also a sign that some pretty cold temperatures are on their way). The course superintendent will soon begin his hibernation to the maintenance facility in which all equipment is rebuilt, repainted and re-sharpened to prepare for the spring. Since opening for play in 1998, Fieldstone Golf Club has become one of the industry’s premier golf courses. This Arthur Hills designed course hosts leagues, outings and other special events.
Each summer, Fieldstone hosts the Club Championship. This competition determines the best-registered players at Fieldstone and gives players the chance to carry an official USGA Handicap with the GAM. The main purpose of the event is to offer our members the opportunity to advance to the State Championship hosted by the Golf Association of Michigan (GAM) each fall. The GAM runs the Tournament of Champions each year. The field is open to anyone who wins their Member Club Championship or a 2014 GAM Championship.
Back in 2013, Greer Clausen, an avid golfer and top player on her high school team, decided to continue her competitive program and enter our local event. Greer, with her experience playing in AJGA, USGA and local tournaments at Fieldstone, decided she had a pretty good chance. Greer was on her way to a great finish during the 2013 schedule when she advanced to the championship at Fieldstone, and went on to win the event over a very skilled field of players.
Playing the 18-hole tournament at Hawk Hollow in Bath, Michigan, Greer was able to beat Stacey Slobodnik-Stoll, MSU’s Women’s Golf Coach, in a playoff after tying Stacey’s score of 73. We can’t confirm Greer beating Stacey had any influence on her attending MSU, but it did secure her spot on the MSU Golf team this year.
Greer was so kind to stop by a week ago on her way off to Michigan State to take a memorable photo with our head instructor Jeff Goble, her 2013 trophy and myself. We wish her the best of luck in East Lansing and yes, she will be defending her title and competing for that same trophy this fall when the GAM will host the Tournament of Champions at Oakland Hills Country Club.
